H.G. Mor Ivanios Mathews Metropolitan was born to Alunkal Abraham and Mary of Kureekadu, Kandanad. He completed his M.A Degree and later B.Th. from Papal Seminary, Pune. On 2 November 1976 he was ordained Kassisso by the Catholicos Aboon Mor Baselios Paulose II. Fr. Mathews served as vicar of churches in New Delhi, Pune, Faridabad and Bahrain. Since 1997, he was the administrator of the Kandanad Diocese. He was ordained 'Rabban' (dayroyo) on 6th August 2000 at the St. George Simhasana Church, Perumpilly by the then Patriarchal representative to Malankara Mor Julius Kuriakose.
On 14 January 2001 the Dayroyo Mathews was consecrated Metropolitan by name IVANIOS by H.H Moran Mor Ignatius Zakka I Iwas, at the Patriarchal St. Peter and St. paul Cathedral in Ma'arat Saydnaya, Damascus, Syria. Mor Ivanios is now the Metropolitan of Kandanad diocese and is also the
President of 'Jacobite Syrian Christian Youth Association'. H.G. for a brief period was the Metropolitan of the Malankara Archdiocese of North America.
